Bernard Fisher, MD, Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, and Norman Wolmark, MD, chairman of the NSABP Foundation, received the 2018 Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) on March 23 during the organization’s 71st Annual Cancer Symposium at McCormick Place Lakeside Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Wolmark accepted the award on behalf of Dr. Fisher and himself from Dr. Jeffrey A. Drebin, SSO Past President.

Growing up in his hometown outside of Philadelphia, Carmen Allegra was a self-described “science geek.” He remembers those times fondly, “I always liked building things and doing experiments to figure out how things work—I was always doing things that my mother would prefer I wouldn't do!" Dr. Allegra’s love of science and “figuring things out” has led to his passion and his career as an oncologist and cancer researcher.

In June 2017, Dr. Norman Wolmark, Chairman of NSABP Foundation, Director Research, Allegheny Health Network, Professor of Surgery, Drexel University College of Medicine and Professor of Surgery, Temple University School of Medicine, was inducted into the Giants of Cancer Care program. The mission of the Giants of Cancer Care program is to celebrate innovators and pioneers who have made remarkable achievements in oncology research and the clinical practice of cancer care. At the induction ceremony on June 1, 2017, Dr. Wolmark was recognized and lauded by his peers for his groundbreaking work and determination.

Dr. Thomas Julian has always loved chemistry, and knew he wanted to pursue his passion at the University of Pittsburgh, just an hour’s drive from his hometown of New Castle, PA. When he enrolled as an undergraduate in the late 1960s, he wasn't completely sure of his career path. However, after living through his mother's medical struggles, he dedicated his career, and his life, to medicine and helping women.
